Burnaby Hospital

Hospitals & Clinics/General Hospitals

Burnaby Hospital is a major acute-care facility under Fraser Health, with about 286 beds. It delivers a full range of primary and secondary medical services including 24/7 emergency care, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics (level one and two), neonatal intensive care, critical care, psychiatry, palliative care, orthopedics, gynecology and urology. Outpatient and ambulatory clinics offer follow-ups, diagnostics, mental health and substance use services. The hospital sees roughly 84,000 emergency visits annually.

Patient Amenities & Environment

Patients are housed in shared rooms by default; private or semi-private rooms may be available depending on need and availability. Visitors are asked to avoid strong scents as the environment is smoke-free and scent-free. There is a cafeteria and café services (including a Tim Hortons), gift shop, visitor services, and spiritual care available. Parking options include pay stations, a parkade, and mobile app-based services like hangTag (with Park + Pay for those without the app). Transportation via public transit options serve the hospital.

Redevelopment & Expansion Plans

Burnaby Hospital is undergoing a multi-phase redevelopment project to modernize facilities, expand capacity and improve patient experience. Phase one (2021-2026) adds a pavilion with 83 new beds in primarily single-patient rooms with private bathrooms, a new maternity unit, neonatal ICU with private rooms, and a medical unit with enhanced infection control zones. Phase two (2025-2030) will further add a 160-bed acute care tower, expand the BC Cancer services (Burnaby McCarthy Centre), enlarge imaging, upgrade the emergency department, and increase operating & procedure rooms.

Access, Practical Information & Parking

Address: 3935 Kincaid Street, Burnaby, BC V5G 2X6. Hospital operates 24/7. Due to redevelopment, some entrances and parking lots are impacted; specific entrances are open at different times of day; accessible parking stalls are available. Payment for parking via pay stations, hangTag mobile app, Park + Pay for non-app users. First hour fees are set, longer stays have different rates; permits for hardship may be available. For emergencies always call 9-1-1.

What Users Should Know

Emergency wait times can fluctuate, especially during high demand. Some specialized services require physician referrals. Not all diagnostic and clinic services operate every day or at all hours. The redevelopment project may cause temporary disruptions in parking, entry, traffic flow. Patients and families should check updated visitor policies which may be adjusted. The goal is to offer more private rooms, improved infection control, more maternity/neonatal capacity and faster access to diagnostics and surgeries.
