Contemporary Calgary
Contemporary Calgary is a nonprofit public art gallery located in the former Centennial Planetarium in downtown Calgary. Established in 2019 through the amalgamation of three local arts organizations, it opened its doors to transformed space in early 2020.
Housed in a Brutalist landmark with a geodesic dome, the gallery offers multiple renovated exhibition spaces, a cinema/performance area, educational venues and a rooftop sculpture garden. Programming includes rotating shows by local, national and international artists, engaging exhibitions such as those by Yoko Ono, Marcel Dzama and Luke Jerram, and thought-provoking thematic series like “Perspective” curated by Muriel N. Kahwagi focusing on bodies of water as markers of power.
The gallery offers daily guided tours at 1 PM, group and school tours (by booking), public workshops, open studios for older adults, pancake breakfasts, and seasonal community events—many free for members or community access via Calgary Public Library Art Pass. Admission is accessible: single visits are $12 for adults, with discounted or by-donation options for under-25s, while annual memberships are around $24.
Contemporary Calgary actively commits to accessibility, inclusivity, and dialogue—offering exhibitions responding to pressing social issues, supporting accessibility through the Art Pass program, and engaging community through diverse public programming.
Overall, Contemporary Calgary presents compelling contemporary art within a reimagined civic icon, balancing compelling visual culture, engaging public events, and civic accessibility.
