Jardin botanique de Montréal
The Montreal Botanical Garden is a major institution of Space for Life ("Espace pour la vie"), the largest natural science museum district in Canada. Covering 75 ha, it showcases over 22,000 species and cultivars in 10 exhibition greenhouses and around 20 themed gardens, including the Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden, First Nations Garden, Alpine, Rose Garden and arboretum.
Research and conservation are central: the Garden hosts the Institut de recherche en biologie végétale in partnership with Université de Montréal, and scientific themes include biodiversity, invasive plant control and urban phytotechnologies. Seasonal attractions such as Butterflies Go Free, The Magic of Lanterns, Grand Bal des citrouilles and Indigenous-themed programming bring culture and education together (though “Butterflies Go Free” ended in 2018).
Facilities include dining services, shuttle, accessibility supports and rental venues like the Frédéric Back Tree Pavilion and greenhouses, suitable for events and meetings. It is designated a National Historic Site of Canada since 2008.
Visiting tips: open year-round, greenhouses accessible in winter while outdoor gardens may be seasonal; lookup blossoms via weekly bloom calendar; city‑of‑Montréal residents can access the outdoor gardens with a pass.
