Mackenzie House

City & Attractions/Museums

Mackenzie House is a municipal historic house museum at 82 Bond Street in downtown Toronto. It was the final residence of William Lyon Mackenzie—Toronto’s first mayor, journalist and 1837 Rebellion leader—and has been operated by the City of Toronto Museum and Heritage Services since opening as a museum in the 1930s.

The Georgian‑style townhouse dates from the late 1850s and survived demolition thanks to advocacy by Mackenzie’s grandson, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Inside, rooms are restored to reflect urban Victorian middle‑class life (c.1860s–1890s), featuring period furniture, family artefacts and an operational 1845 printing press in a recreated print shop.

Public access is via guided tours Wednesday to Sunday, 11am–5pm; admission is free though group bookings may incur a fee. The site has a small courtyard displaying panels from the former Niagara Falls Honeymoon Bridge arch, and tours include narratives on Mackenzie’s political activism and the print culture of his time.

Educational and seasonal programs include school workshops (printing press, media history), special events about Black Canadian history such as Mary Ann Shadd Cary, plus exhibitions, walking tours and participating festivals like Doors Open and Contact Photography Festival.

Mackenzie House is noted for its intimate immersive experience, compact footprint, rich storytelling and hands‑on printing activity. It remains partially accessible and was temporarily closed for restoration after flooding in 2021; fundraising efforts are ongoing to refurbish the site.

Overall, the museum offers a well‑conceived glimpse into mid‑19th‑century urban life, activism and media, making it highly suitable for local history enthusiasts, students and tourists exploring Toronto’s origins.
