Nathan Phillips Square
Nathan Phillips Square, situated directly in front of Toronto City Hall, serves as the city’s main civic plaza and cultural gathering space. The central reflecting pool transforms into an outdoor artificial ice rink in winter, while in warmer seasons it functions as a tranquil water feature surrounded by ample plaza seating.
The square hosts a variety of public events: concerts, festivals, seasonal markets, civic ceremonies and occasional protests. Iconic landmarks include the Toronto sign, Peace Garden, Freedom Arches and city-operated art installations. Visitors often engage with food vendors, live performances and community gatherings.
Managed by the City of Toronto’s Parks, Forestry & Recreation in partnership with Municipal Licensing & Standards, the site is open year‑round with free access. Amenities include accessible walkways, washrooms, benches and occasional temporary art displays. Given its central location and frequent programming, the square can become very busy—especially during summer or major city events—so arriving early or checking schedules is advised.
