Northeast Community Health Centre

Hospitals & Clinics/General Hospitals

Northeast Community Health Centre (NECHC) is a community health facility in Edmonton, Alberta, operated under Alberta Health Services. Its address is 14007 50 Street NW, Edmonton, T5A 5E4. It operates 24 hours and includes a full emergency department, community and outpatient services, diagnostics, family health, mental health and other supports. The centre aims at providing many health services locally to reduce the need for patients to travel to larger hospitals.

Services & Clinical Programs

The services offered at NECHC include a variety of outpatient and diagnostic clinics: general pediatric clinic, family health clinic (with University of Alberta residents teaching), radiography (X-ray), ultrasound imaging, laboratory services, and nutrition counselling for adults, pregnant patients, and children. There is also a clinic for sports injuries and fractures (non-surgical), child & adolescent health clinic, audiology services, women’s health clinic, diabetic nephropathy prevention clinics, addiction & mental health adult community services. These cover both acute and ongoing chronic health needs.

Patient & Community Support Features

The centre supports services for diverse populations, including recent immigrants, low income families, Indigenous persons. Interpreter/translation services are offered. Visiting hours are flexible (formal fixed visiting hours removed in Edmonton zone, visits based on care needs). Parking is available. The facility includes programs tailored to community needs, e.g. addiction and mental health support, family health, child & adolescent clinic. There is volunteer support, patient information and records management. Lost & found, protective services, switchboard, etc., are also part of the support infrastructure.

Strengths & Challenges

Strengths: The NECHC offers a broad mix of services under one roof in the community setting, which helps patients avoid large hospital trips; having 24/7 emergency plus diagnostics locally is a strong plus. Teaching presence (via University of Alberta) in the family health clinic adds value for quality of care and access. Challenges: Some specialized or surgical services are NOT available (e.g. emergent surgery beyond ED, major inpatient care), so patients with complex needs still must go to major hospitals. Wait times for outpatient clinics or diagnostic imaging might vary. Also, capacity (parking, staff) in busy times may be stretched. Knowledge of which clinic/service to access may be confusing for new users.

Practical Information & User Tips

Switchboard: 780-342-4000. For non-urgent clinics, check ahead for referral or appointment requirements. Bring valid health insurance card / ID. For ultrasound or imaging, ensure the test you need is offered there. For pediatric or family health matters, the family health clinic may be cost-effective and more accessible. Expect that transit or parking may take extra time; plan accordingly. If you have language barriers, ask for interpreter services. For injuries or fractures not requiring surgery, their sports injury / fracture clinic may be appropriate. Emergency services open 24 hours.
