Prince's Island Park

City & Attractions/Natural Sites & Parks

Prince’s Island Park is a 20-hectare urban park situated immediately north of downtown Calgary, set on an island in the Bow River. It is a well-loved green space with a mix of natural areas and recreational facilities. A constructed wetland on the park’s eastern side treats stormwater before it returns to the river, and the environmental learning trail (Chevron Learning Pathway) provides interpretation about habitat, water quality, and native plant restoration.

The park is known for hosting major public events such as the Calgary Folk Music Festival, Canada Day celebrations, Heritage Day, Shakespeare in the Park and other cultural gatherings. These draw large crowds and contribute to the lively atmosphere.

Facilities include picnic areas, a playground, flower gardens, paved walking and cycling paths, seasonal washrooms and fountains, cross-country skiing in winter, and free outdoor skating on the lagoon. The River Café offers full-service dining, though it is closed in January each year. Dogs are allowed on-leash, except during large events like Canada Day, when restrictions apply.

Built on land donated in 1947 by the Prince family, the park is linked to both sides of downtown by footbridges and forms part of Calgary’s extensive pathway network. It is accessible, scenic and versatile, balancing urban convenience with ecological design.

Overall, Prince’s Island Park provides a rich urban experience—where community recreation, cultural programming and environmental education come together seamlessly in a central, riverfront setting.
