Québec Family Doctor Finder
The Guichet d’accès à un médecin de famille (GAMF) is the official provincial service in Quebec that allows residents without a family doctor to register online and be matched with one. It was created to reduce the number of “orphan patients” who lack a regular physician. Registration requires a valid Quebec health insurance card (RAMQ) and current personal information, including address and contact details. Once enrolled, a resident is placed on a waiting list and matched when a family doctor becomes available in their area.
How it works
After registering, patients are prioritized based on their health needs, which can be assessed through self-reported medical information and subsequent follow-up by local health authorities. Those with chronic illnesses, pregnancy, or vulnerable conditions may be given priority. When a physician is available, the resident will be contacted to confirm and formalize the attachment. The process is managed regionally by Centres intégrés de santé et de services sociaux (CISSS) and Centres intégrés universitaires de santé et de services sociaux (CIUSSS).
Benefits and limits
The system is a structured and equitable way of allocating family doctors, avoiding a first-come, first-served scramble. It supports continuity of care and ensures that the most vulnerable populations are matched first. However, waiting times vary greatly depending on region and availability of doctors, and in some areas the delay can be very long. The tool does not guarantee immediate attachment, nor does it list which doctors are currently accepting patients. Patients are encouraged to keep their information updated to avoid delays.
Who should use it
Any Quebec resident without a family physician who holds a valid RAMQ card should consider registering. It is particularly useful for newcomers to Quebec, families who recently lost their doctor due to retirement or relocation, or anyone with increased medical needs requiring a steady provider.
Governance and context
GAMF is a service provided by the Government of Quebec through the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MSSS). It is operated in collaboration with RAMQ and the local CISSS/CIUSSS organizations. The platform is part of Quebec’s broader healthcare reform efforts to improve primary care access and reduce pressure on walk-in clinics and emergency rooms.
