Riverdale Farm
Riverdale Farm is a municipally run working farm located in Toronto’s Cabbagetown neighbourhood, occupying about 7.5 acres adjacent to Riverdale Park West. Open since 1978 as a tribute to Ontario’s small‑family farm heritage, it features heritage buildings, paddocks for cows, pigs, goats, sheep, horses, poultry and waterfowl, as well as wooded zones, ponds and gardens.
The site contains several historic structures: the Francey Barn (a rare 1858 Pennsylvania bank barn), the Victorian Simpson House, Pig & Poultry Barn, Drive Shed, Meeting House, Donnybrook ruin and Island House — some remnants of the former Riverdale Zoo which operated here until 1974.
Visitors follow over three kilometres of marked trails winding through paddocks, past duck ponds and flower‑vegetable‑herb gardens. A daily farm demonstration at about 11:30 a.m. introduces an animal in the Francey Barn, offering a casual educational experience for families. Interactive programs and summer camps are held in the Meeting House, which also provides accessible washrooms and baby‑change facilities.
Admission is free and the farm is open 365 days a year from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Accessible and stroller‑friendly, it's ideal for family visits, school groups or solo urban explorers. Feeding animals is discouraged; pets, cycles, scooters and ride‑on toys are not permitted to protect both farm operations and animal welfare.
The Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group, established in 2013, partners with Toronto Parks to ensure sustainable funding and educational programming. The farm continues to represent an important cultural landmark and community gathering place near downtown, attracting thousands annually.
