Robson Square

City & Attractions/City Landmarks

Robson Square is a landmark civic complex in downtown Vancouver, designed by Arthur Erickson and completed in phases between 1979–1983. It spans three blocks and integrates public space, government buildings, a UBC satellite campus, the Provincial Law Courts, and scenic waterfalls.

Design & Features

  • Architectural concept: Erickson envisioned a “skyscraper laid on its back”, turning the upper courts roof into an accessible plaza.
  • Water features & plaza: Cascading waterfalls circulate approx. 850,000 US gal, providing natural cooling and ambient sound.
  • Outdoor skating rink: Vancouver’s only free public ice rink; winter admission is free, skate rentals ~$5.

Facilities & Usage

  • Law Courts building: 7-storey glass-roofed atrium housing 35 courtrooms under a 42 m high roof.
  • UBC Robson Square campus: Located in the central block, offering continuing education and sustainable learning initiatives.
  • Public and civic functions: Hosts protests, performances, skating, dance, and civic gatherings; plaza redesign completed in 2021 enhanced inclusivity and First Nations recognition.

Accessibility & Sustainability

  • Pedestrian-first design: Emphasizes walkability, ramps and stairs, though some accessibility concerns remain due to slope.
  • Awards: Recognized with RAIC’s Prix du XXe siècle (2011), Governor General’s Gold Medal (1982), and ASLA design award (1979).

Context & Surroundings

  • Adjacent landmarks: Directly connected to Vancouver Art Gallery (former courthouse), sits above Robson Street, and neighbours civic, cultural and retail hubs like Pacific Centre.
  • Plaza upgrades: The 800-block transformation (2019–2021) created šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énḵ Square, honoring Indigenous culture and improving usability.

Assessment
Robson Square is a masterstroke of urban design merging architecture, landscape and civic life. The accessible plaza, court transparency, and seasonal ice rink foster everyday community interaction. The sustainability elements and civic awards underscore its merit. Some access ramps could benefit from updates. Ideal for casual visits, legal functional use, public gathering, and academic programming.
