Scarborough Health Network (SHN) is one of Ontario’s largest community hospital networks, serving the diverse and rapidly growing population of Scarborough, Toronto. It operates three hospitals: General Hospital, Birchmount Hospital, and Centenary Hospital. Together, they provide a wide spectrum of care supported by specialty programs and research initiatives.

Areas of Care

SHN delivers services across key clinical areas. Emergency and urgent care are available 24/7 across all hospitals. The Cancer Care program offers advanced diagnostics and treatments tailored to patient needs. The Cardiac Care unit provides interventions, rehabilitation, and prevention programs. Maternal and newborn care includes obstetrics, neonatal intensive care, and family-centred services. Mental health and addictions care is offered through inpatient and outpatient programs, including crisis support. SHN also provides kidney care, stroke services, surgery, diabetes education, seniors’ health, and palliative care.

Each site has a focus: General Hospital is known for surgical and emergency services, Birchmount for family and seniors’ care, and Centenary for cardiac and trauma services. Outpatient rehabilitation, sexual assault and domestic violence support, and sickle cell disease care highlight SHN’s commitment to specialized needs.

Research and Education

As a teaching partner of the Scarborough Academy of Medicine at the University of Toronto, SHN plays a major role in training medical students, nurses, and allied health professionals. Research priorities include health equity, chronic disease management, and innovative digital health solutions.

Patient Access and Digital Tools

Patients can use MyChart, a secure online portal, to access medical records, book appointments, and communicate with care teams. SHN also provides interpretation services, Indigenous patient navigation, and community health outreach programs.
