Spadina Museum

City & Attractions/Museums

Spadina Museum, also known as Spadina House, is a heritage mansion in Toronto operated by the City of Toronto’s Culture Division since its opening as a museum in 1984. The site comprises six acres atop the Baldwin Steps ravine and includes the restored 1866 mansion, associated service buildings, gardens, orchard, greenhouse and chauffeur’s quarters. The house interior reflects styles from the Victorian through Art Deco periods and contains much of the original Austin family furniture and décor.

Visitors explore the home through scheduled free guided tours, Wednesday through Sunday, at multiple daily time slots. Tours incorporate a brief orientation film followed by a walking tour through 14 rooms decorated to reflect life circa 1900–1930, illustrating social, technological and cultural changes of the era.

The landscaped gardens and grounds—including formal flower beds, a kitchen garden, grape arbour, orchard and stone pergola—are open daily and evoke early 20th‑century horticultural practices. Many visitors comment on the gardens' peaceful ambiance and subtle charm, often citing it as a quiet gem in the city.

Spadina Museum hosts seasonal events and educational programs, such as school camps, heritage-themed performances and occasional exhibitions exploring under‑represented narratives. Renovated in 2010 to focus on the inter‑war period (1920s‑30s), the house now includes exhibits on restoration history, servants’ life, and technological transitions like electricity and telephony.

Admission is free, though house entry requires joining one of the guided tours. Group visits with advance booking may incur fees. Accessibility is partial, and paid parking is available nearby at Casa Loma.

Overall, Spadina Museum offers a high‑quality, immersive walk through Toronto’s early 20th‑century elite life, enhanced by well‑maintained grounds and knowledgeable guides—ideal for local history enthusiasts, families, and visitors seeking a quieter alternative to busier attractions.
