Strathcona Community Hospital
Strathcona Community Hospital is located at 9000 Emerald Drive, Sherwood Park, Alberta, under Alberta Health Services. It opened in 2014 and combines primary health care and community-based services alongside a full 24-hour Emergency Department. On site diagnostic services support its acute care and outpatient functions. It complements existing community care, public health, home care, and mental health programs in the surrounding area.
Services & Clinical Programs
This hospital provides an array of services including a 24/7 Emergency Department for major trauma, cardiac events, injuries and general medical problems. It offers diagnostic imaging (CT, general radiography, ultrasound), laboratory services, general adult surgery, orthopedic and ENT clinics, neurology clinic, IV therapy, colposcopy clinic, and community rehabilitation programs. Ambulatory care and outpatient mental health & addiction services (child, adolescent, adult) are also available. Geriatric outpatient medicine and respiratory therapy in the community are part of its service offerings.
Patient & Community-Centered Features
Visiting hours are flexible; formal fixed visiting hours have been removed in the Edmonton zone so that visit timing is guided by patient care needs. The hospital is wheelchair accessible. Public transit and parking facilities are provided. Translation/interpreter services are available. Social work and IV therapy clinics support patients transitioning home or navigating follow-ups. Community programs such as pulmonary rehabilitation (“Breathe Easy”), opioid dependency, domestic abuse response, and mental health mechanisms are part of its scope.
Strengths & Challenges
Strengths include the hospital’s modern design, integration of community health, diagnostics, and emergency services under one roof. It reduces travel for many patients who might otherwise go to larger urban hospitals. Its mental health/addiction programs and rehabilitation resources are important in addressing local chronic health needs. Challenges include potential wait times in emergency during busy periods, limited inpatient bed count (this is more of a community hospital rather than a large tertiary centre), and navigating referrals for highly specialized care that must go to larger centres. At times, parking and transit access may present inconvenience depending on time of day.
