TELUS Spark Science
TELUS Spark Science Centre is Calgary's interactive science museum located in a purpose-built facility just north of the Calgary Zoo. Opened in 2011 as the re-branded successor to the Calgary Science Centre, it houses hands-on exhibits, multimedia galleries, a 3D dome theatre, and a creative space designed for young visitors. Annually it draws over 400 000 visitors, including more than 80 000 students, establishing itself as a major destination in STEAM education.
The museum’s design reflects sustainability and inclusivity. Built with LEED Gold standards, it integrates energy-efficient systems, abundant natural light, and flexible program zones. The facility includes the Creative Kids Museum, Canada's first hands-on arts museum for children, featuring immersive discoveries in music, theatre, and visual arts.
Through interactive galleries and theatre presentations, TELUS Spark offers exploration of science, technology, engineering, art, and math. Its programming includes school-aligned field trips, public workshops, outreach programs, and innovative approaches to engaging diverse learners.
TELUS supports the museum as a title sponsor, demonstrating its community commitment in education and innovation. However, governance rests with the Calgary Science Centre Society, a not-for-profit that operates the museum with oversight from a board of directors. This funding and governance structure ensures programming remains responsive to community and educational needs.
By combining sustainable architecture, kid-centered design, and STEAM-oriented learning, TELUS Spark fosters scientific curiosity and creative discovery across generations.
