TO Live
Overview
TO Live is a City of Toronto agency created to manage and operate the city's three major civic theatres. Previously known as Civic Theatres Toronto, it oversees Meridian Hall, Meridian Arts Centre and the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts. As a unified cultural operator, it aims to enhance Toronto’s artistic and social vibrancy through performance venues and public programming.
Venues and Mandate
Meridian Hall, located at Front Street East, is Canada's largest soft-seat theatre and hosts major concerts and performances. Meridian Arts Centre, at Yonge Street, includes multiple theatres for theatrical productions, orchestras and community events. The St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts houses two theatres and serves as a home to local not-for-profit performing-arts groups. TO Live is mandated to provide high-quality performance facilities and promote their contribution to the city’s cultural life.
Governance and Foundation
The agency was established by City Council under the City of Toronto Act and governed via a 13-member board appointed by Council: ten public members and three Council representatives. TO Live Foundation, a registered charity, raises funds to support artists and programming. This structure ensures accountability and community representation in cultural decisions.
Programs and Engagement
Beyond venue management, TO Live curates diverse performing-arts events, supports local arts through the Foundation, and contributes to creative learning and community outreach. It acts as a bridge between artists and audiences using both established venues and inclusive programming.
Visitor and Community Impact
Audiences benefit from access to high-profile events in downtown Toronto and community-oriented performances in multiple neighbourhood venues. TO Live plays a key role in sustaining Toronto’s arts infrastructure, supporting cultural participation and enhancing access to the performing arts.
Overall Assessment
TO Live effectively consolidates the operations of major civic theatres under a single, accountable agency. Its governance structure with public oversight and charitable fundraising supports both artistic excellence and public engagement. As a cornerstone of Toronto’s cultural ecosystem, it balances practical management of venues with mission-driven programming and artist support.
