Vancouver Coastal Health
Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is one of five regional health authorities in British Columbia, Canada. It works in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders to deliver a broad range of health-care services and supports for more than 1.25 million people in its service region. The region includes urban centres (Vancouver, Richmond, North Shore) as well as coastal and rural communities such as Sea-to-Sky, Sunshine Coast, Powell River and the Central Coast.
Services and scope
VCH provides community-based care, home health services, acute hospital care, public health, mental health & substance-use programs, and specialized tertiary/quaternary services. Community and hospital services are delivered via more than 120 locations across its region. Integrated with Indigenous health commitments, equity & diversity priorities, VCH’s vision is “healthy lives in healthy communities”.
Access and region
Residents in the region are able to access VCH services via hospitals, primary care clinics, community health centres and home care programmes. The service area is large and geographically diverse – a mix of urban, suburban and rural/coastal settings. VCH collaborates with neighbouring health authorities to deliver specialist care, meaning that it also serves patients beyond its immediate region for high-complexity needs.
Strengths & considerations
A major strength of VCH lies in its broad geographical coverage, its integration of hospital, community and home-based care, and inclusion of Indigenous health, research and teaching as part of its mandate. The wide range of services allows for continuity across settings. On the other hand, the expansive region and varied community types mean that access in rural and remote locations may present additional challenges, wait-lists may apply for non-urgent services, and navigating the system may require proactive referrals or assessment.
Who this is for
VCH services are relevant for individuals and families living in the VCH region (Vancouver, North Shore, Richmond, coastal zones) requiring primary care, hospital care, community support, mental health or substance-use services, public health programming, home care or specialist care. For people outside the region (e.g., Toronto, Montreal, Calgary) VCH services would not apply other than via very specific provincial/tertiary referrals.
Summary
In summary, Vancouver Coastal Health is a comprehensive regional health authority in British Columbia that spans a wide spectrum of care from home and community services through to tertiary hospital care. Its mission emphasises equitable access, integrated care, and service to a diverse population across urban and remote settings.
